I have written two books with Renate Stendhal, a translator, writer and writing consultant. Although English is not her native language, her grammatical command of it, and her ability to spell it, far exceed mine. We make a good working pair. I am always getting lost in the larger picture, growing impatient of the steps and necessary details that bring it into focus. Renate is a true master of details, both as a reader and as a writer. I have learned from her to notice, to observe, to take care, to be patient, both when writing books and when gardening. She once drew a picture of me flying off wildly into the clouds, happily, heedlessly and quite dangerously leaving the earth behind. She was also in the picture, on the ground, a rope tied around her waist, holding on to me, making it possible to return. These tendencies in us, as encountered and modified by one another, have made us good writing partners.
